Up the ladder

You got that big promotion. Congratulations! You did a great job, but guess what? Your job isn’t over. In fact, it’s just beginning.

Welcome to Career Insider. Did you know that only 4.5% of workers are promoted within the first two years of being hired?

That needs to change.

Today, let’s discuss how to get promoted and exactly what to do after that promotion to keep your momentum going.

Also, here’s a shocker: 29% of workers left their employer within a month of getting promoted. This means promotions lead to a higher risk of that person leaving. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place!

PROMOTIONS
Want a promotion? Try asking for it

People don’t usually get promotions by chance. Instead, promotions come to those who’ve earned them (usually).

Traditional advice: Do your job, learn new things, be a team player, yada yada yada. Eventually, you’ll get a promotion. Most likely.

It’s not bad advice. After all, doing your job well and learning new things will help your career. The problem is that a promotion will likely take a while to come if you’re not a little more proactive.

Yes, do the traditional things. But there’s also one more thing you can do.

Just ask for it.

Don't be afraid to talk with your boss about your career goals. Let them know you're interested in moving up in the company and ask for their advice on how to get there. Showing initiative and interest can put you on their radar for future opportunities.

You might not get an instant “Yes,” but I can assure you that managers love it when their staff asks for more opportunities.

So, plant the seed with your boss. Then, water that seed by continuing to do great work. You might be surprised at how fast the seed sprouts.

Three things to do right after a big promotion

You got that big promotion. Congratulations! You did a great job, but guess what? Your job isn’t over. In fact, it’s just beginning.

Here are four things you can do after getting a promotion:

Thank Everyone: Most people skip this step. Don’t make that mistake. Take a moment to thank the people who helped you reach this milestone. It could be your colleagues, mentors, or even your family. Saying thank you shows appreciation and builds strong relationships.

Set Goals: Now that you've reached a higher position, it's a good idea to set new goals. Think about what you want to achieve in your new role (hint: these goals should be different - and more aggressive than your previous role). Maybe you want to improve certain skills or take on even more responsibilities. Setting clear goals helps you stay focused and motivated.

Learn: Keep learning and growing. Take advantage of any training opportunities available to you (note that these opportunities might look different in your new role, so be sure to ask about them). Read books, attend workshops, or seek advice from experienced colleagues. The more you learn, the better equipped you'll be to succeed in your new position.

Stay Humble: While it's important to celebrate your success, it's also important to stay humble. Remember where you came from and stay grounded. Treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position. Humility will earn you respect and help you build strong relationships with your team, and will help you get that next promotion.
