Welcome to Career Insider. An insane number of people are unsatisfied with their current jobs. In fact, that’s the majority of the emails we get from our subscribers. They aren’t happy and they want out.

In today’s email, let’s talk about one thing you should do today if you’re one of those people who want a job or career change.

And don’t worry, it’s easier than you think.

CAREER
The one thing to do if you’re unhappy in your career

Dani

Job satisfaction is at an all-time low. If you’re one of these people who is unhappy at work, you need to do something…today.

A recent report found that a whopping 64% of employees are unhappy at work and looking for something better.

It found that:

  • Only 15% are satisfied with their jobs

  • 21% feel valued at work

  • 70% quit because of bad bosses

  • Almost half are searching for new jobs

This is pretty bleak, isn’t it? Just 15% of employees worldwide said they were highly satisfied with their jobs.

That number needs to be much higher.

If you’re one of these people who feel unsatisfied at work, there’s one thing that you should do right now. Like, today. This instant. Before you even finish reading this email.

Think of one person from your professional network. Call or email them and set up a lunch for some time next week (or tomorrow!).

This isn’t an opportunity to just B.S. with that person, either.

What you can talk about:

  • Discuss your frustrations

  • See if they have advice for you

  • Talk about what you actually want to do

  • Ask about what they are seeing in their industry

Don’t outright ask them to find you a job at their company. Instead, let the conversation flow naturally, and it might shift in that direction anyway.

The point is to open up the lines of communication so they know you’re actively looking. If they hear of something, they might let you know.

And remember, your lunch conversation is a two-way street. Let them vent (if they need to) as well. You might be surprised at what they say.

So, make that lunch date today and get the convo started.

RESUMES
Remember to always do this with your resume.

If you’re actively looking for another job, you probably have a resume saved somewhere that’s impossible to find on your hard drive.

Here’s the other thing you need to do if you hate your job: update your resume so it’s ready to go.

Here’s what to do:

  • Locate it

  • Add new skills

  • Remove outdated skills

  • Keep it where you can find it easily

Pro tip: Save your resume to Google Drive, Dropbox or anywhere else you can access from anywhere. You never know when you’ll need it.

Remember, everything on your resume is fair game in an interview.

For instance: If you’re interviewing for a job that requires expertise in a certain software product, but you’ve only seen it once or twice, don’t say you have “experience” with it.

If they ask you questions about it, it’s a bad look to say, “Well, I don’t really know a lot about it, but I’ve seen it a couple times.

Only include on your resume what you’re confident about.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be an expert, but include skills and experience you can talk about, achievements you’ve made, etc.

And don’t forget to tailor your resume to the job you’re going after.

Having one version of your resume isn’t ideal. Remember that most job openings get hundreds of resumes. You want yours to stand out.

Go get ‘em!
